A Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson on Wednesday reaffirmed that no one will emerge a winner from a trade war.

Media reported the US Chamber of Commerce and other trade associations urged the US government not to impose unilateral tariffs on Chinese goods, as it would hurt American consumers and US economic growth.

In response, spokesperson Hua Chunying said that there is no winner in a trade war, and there is no "super armor" that can guarantee the invulnerability of a certain country when it wields the big stick of trade protectionism at others.

"The right way to solve the imbalance is to open the market wider to each other and make the pie of bilateral cooperation bigger, instead of launching trade wars," she said.

Surely this analysis is right. In history, only by negotiation and talks can disputes be effectively resolved without great damagies.
But, the history, on the other hand, is always advancing with wars, at home or the world over. Wars can be a powerful catalyst which drives the history forward at an unusual speed. If the trade war de facto happens in between US and China, who knows what the world will make a difference. In most cases, you know, history is unpredictable.

A trade war will be good for the environment. The less goods are shipped half-way around the world, the less consumers pollute Nature. You can produce all these manufactured goods in the consumer markets. There is no need to export to big overseas markets that have the manpower to make them themselves.

Trade barriers basically are paid to special interest groups by consumers who pay more for the protection of both capital and labor.
My problem is simple: I just know better than everyone-else!

Trump's major supporters are from agriculture-dominant states. Trump is going to either lose his sleep or have his nightmare if China imposes heavy tariff on agricultural products, i.e. corns, cotton, etc. which can be easily substituted by other countries.

Trump administration is dead wrong to think they would benefit from the trade barriers they put up against China.

The goods from China would remain competitive with regard to costs and prices, even with the additional tariffs levied on China's exports, of which the US can hardly find replacement elsewhere. The US consumers and companies only have to pay more than what they used to do for the same stuff.

Moreover, the US owes the low level of inflation it has enjoyed over the past 2 decades largely  to the cheap consumer goods and mechanical/electronic products coming from China. Things will be changing with the inevitable price rises in the US, earnings of the US corporations will be shrinking,  more people will be plunged into poverty, social unrest will likely ensue.

There may be a few who get their pockets lined by this move, but the country is screwed up.
Believe it or not, it's true.

Trump should go back to hosting reality show;  he is not fit to be US president; he has done more harm than good to US and the world.  He does not understand economics, does not understand that a trade deficit is not a loss to the US; many Americans benefit from cheaper goods from China and other countries.
Worse still, he is living in the past; he doesn't understand that today's manufacturing is dependent on the global supply chain where the components of a product comes from many countries, not just from China. China's contribution to making Apple's iphone is but a small portion of the overall input, the rest comes from US, S Korea etc.  Trump takes the final value of the Apple iphone into calculating the trade deficit, when a better and fairer approach would be the exclude the cost input of the other countries; then the trade deficit with China figure would be much less, and more manageable.  In trying to protect the jobs of a few thousand supporters he is prepared to raise the cost of products that affect all Americans, particularly the poorer ones who need cheap products, and even plunge the world into a needless trade war in which there is no winner! That is the price Americans pay when they put this clown in the White House!
