The US should begin with currency manipulation. It seems that government’s biggest fear is that China will stop loaning us money to finance the trade deficit. But there is a precedent for taking action. In 1971, both Germany and Japan began manipulating their currencies. The Reagan administration imposed a 10% surcharge on their imports, and they immediately quit manipulating their currencies. We need to do the same thing to China and other Asian countries, but the surcharge should start at 25% and be reduced accordingly if they comply.

Unilateral actions is purely stpid since such actions will invite retaliatins. The US can kick Huawei or impost tarriffs on China exports. However, the Chinese people simply stop buying American automobiles. An eye for an eye is todays's fair trade policy.

Economic protectionism does not work because trade tariffs distort the market mechanism in selecting winners and losers. Take mobile phones. Motorola used to be number one in China but now it is no longer in business. Instead, Chinese OEMs now dominate the smartphone market in China and gaining market share overseas. Trump’s tariffs will hurt US corporations more than the Chinese factories where they source their products from. In the case of tech goods, the losers are Apple, HP, Dell, etc. because they will lose their tax-free profits from outsourcing manufacturing to China as well as the Wall Street Capitalist elites who have the most to lose from the expected decline in the US stock markets.

The US buy Chinese goods worth $3 for every $1 of goods the US sells to China. So China stands to lose a lot more than the Americans. The US imports from China employ millions of Chinese workers, and any reduction in imports would force big layoffs. This is a big threat to the Chinese government.
