(Global Times) Australia should indeed be anxious if it regards all the millions of Chinese staying in Australia as spies, the Chinese foreign ministry said Thursday in response to Australia listing China as an "extreme threat."

"If some people in Australia regard millions of people who travel back and forth between China and Australia and Chinese living in Australia as spies, there is no wonder they may feel nervous," ministry spokesperson Hua Chunying told a daily briefing on Thursday.

Hua's remarks came in response to the Australian Security Intelligence Organization listing China as an extreme threat on a supposedly secret country-by-country counter-intelligence index.

The organization's threat index had five levels: negligible, low, medium, high and extreme. China topped the list as the most extreme threat to national security, 9news.com.au, an Australia-based news website reported on Wednesday.

"It is more like the ruling party of Australia is making use of the issue to gain a reputation for safeguarding national security before the election and so it selected a rising China as a target," Han Feng, professor and deputy director-general at the National Institute of International Strategy, Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, told the Global Times on Thursday.

"Australia also raised this issue to ease US worries on Australia's ties with China. And it also wants to urge the US to maintain Western countries' leading role in the world," Han said.

Australia's anxious attitude toward China will last for "a period of time" after the foreign policy white paper issued in November last year and the US 2018 National Defense Strategy published in January, he said.

For some countries, including Australia and US, China is a convenient scapegoat for everything that is going wrong. The background work (such as regularly demonising China) done by some media and forum has prepared the people to accept the lies without question.

""For some countries, including Australia and US, China is a convenient scapegoat for everything that is going wrong.""

How much longer will this work though. The US and many other western nations are so hooked on
plentiful and inexpensive goods from China they can't break the addiction.
These goods have made the rich in western nations ever richer and the working class spoiled and apathetic.
These oligarchies are not even trying to break their addictions. The withdrawal would be too painful
for both the rich and the working class.
It's going to be far worse an addiction to break than the opium addictions visited upon China by the
west in the 19th century.
If capitalism promotes innovation and creativity then why aren't scientists and artists the richest people in a capitalist nation?

The present Australian Government are so busy kissing the devil's hindquarters and proving to their big brother (USA) just how obedient they are at following the US administration's pet peeve (China).  Most Australian's with any intelligence don't give a damn about China spying as they aren't going to find much here of value.

It's a storm in a teacup and typical of the paranoid "Liberal" (conservative) party.

Look at Australian recycling industry collapsing since China banned imports of recyclable waste from Australia. Local councils are now telling Australians not to recycle because they cannot do anything with it but store it and insurance companies are not going to insure it soon because of how much of a fire hazard it is. This is a tiny example of how China can cause big problems for Australia if China wants to. And why now? Australian economy means nothing to China and if Australian government wants to treat China as an enemy then why not? Why not destroy the Australian economy. China can do it easily. China can make an announcement tomorrow nthay in response to Australian hysteria and anxiety China is temporarily banning Chinese from buying property in Australia. Next day Australia housing market collapses and Australian economy with it. Do it China! Come on!

What ASIO is really afraid of is me. ASIO doesn't want me to be able to write things like my attack above. That is what ASIO is afraid of.
