The Soviet Red Army not the US military invaded Japanese-occupied Korea and defeated the Imperial Japanese Army at the close of WWII. The US military moved into South Korea only after Japan had already surrendered. The partition between Soviet-occupied North Korea and US-occupied South Korea was agreed upon at the Potsdam Conference.
