I went to Tibet in 1987 and later travelled on to China and Hong Kong. In those days, Tibeet was genuinely Tibetan. Today it is a Disneyland with fake décor to make money off Chinese visitors. Plus there is the security issue and the enormous hassles of getting aa permit to travel there from China.

I went there in 1987.

It was still Tibetan. Original, unadulterated. It was also a tad more challenging to travel as the means of transport were available erratically and moved erratically. It was a real adventure trip for me.

I did the whole trip overland from Nepal to Tibet and on to China and eventually Hong Kong. Today peole rush in and out of Tibet by plane or by train. It's soon going to look like a very busy beehive.

But you still have hassles to obtain a permit, and once there you have to consider your safety.
