JOHANNESBURG –  Eritrea's president in a rare interview is expressing his displeasure with Israel's plan to deport tens of thousands of African migrants, saying they deserve far more than the $3,500 offered to leave.

President Isaias Afwerki's interview posted on a government website Wednesday says the migrants from his country and Sudan paid a "high price" to human traffickers to reach Israel and deserve more like $50,000.
Many leaving the east African nation claim they fled a restrictive Eritrean regime where men are often forced into a military service with slavery-like conditions.
Afwerki claims the Eritrean migrants were enticed abroad to organize an armed opposition but that the "subversive schemes" failed and the migrants have become a burden.
He says Eritrea has offered to register all its migrants but Israeli authorities refused.

You can be sympathetic to the Erytrean refugees (and I for one am), and you can also be opposed to them receiving refugee status in Western countries - what the president of their homeland just said is a testament to African leaders' greed, cold-heartedness and lack of morality.

If the president of that country were not president of that country, maybe a more capable person would run the nation. A more capa le person would first sympathise with his compatriots and try to improve their lot. The current president of Erytrea, however, can be called a "slave driver". That he of all Africans has the cheek to say his compatriots who voted with their feet against him should be compensasted by the refugee receivber country more generously than Erytrea ever compensates any of its citizens points to a disturbingly poor common sense in the man!
