9. Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer I

Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer I (also called The Lady in Gold or The Woman in Gold) is a painting by Gustav Klimt, completed between 1903 and 1907. The portrait was commissioned by the sitter’s husband, Ferdinand Bloch-Bauer, a Jewish banker and sugar producer. The painting was stolen by the Nazis in 1941 and displayed at the Österreichische Galerie Belvedere. In 2006, following eight years of effort by the Bloch-Bauer heirs, the painting was returned to the family; it was sold the same year for $158.4 million, at the time a record price for a painting.

Le Rêve (“The Dream”) is a 1932 oil painting (130 × 97 cm) by Pablo Picasso, then 50 years old, portraying his 22-year-old mistress Marie-Thérèse Walter. The painting was sold to Steve Cohen in 2013 for $158.5 million.

5. Les Femmes d'Alger (The Women of Algiers)

Les Femmes d'Alger ("Women of Algiers") is a series of 15 paintings and numerous drawings by Pablo Picasso. The series, created in 1954–1955, was inspired by Eugène Delacroix's 1834 painting The Women of Algiers in Their Apartment (French: Femmes d'Alger dans leur appartement). The series is one of several painted by Picasso in tribute to artists that he admired.

In 2015, Picasso’s The Women of Algiers set a new world record for the most expensive artwork to be sold at auction after reaching $179m in New York.
