New Zealand is home to a range of outdoor activities — from bungee jumping to caving and canyoning — but its "Flying Fox" zip line ride at Mokai Gravity Canyon is a must in New Zealand's adrenalin arsenal. The Fox holds up to three people at a time in climbing harnesses, who depart from a platform almost 600 feet in the air. The flight down the zip line reaches speeds of almost 100 miles an hour and soars above a spectacular gorge of the Rangitikei River, travels under a bridge with a heart-stopping turn toward a cliff face.

Zip Adventures, Colorado: Zip Adventures' zip line tour in the Vail, Colo. valley features six different ziplines over high canyons. The longest zip is 1,000 feet and the highest is 200 feet. (Zip Adventures)

Visitors feel like daredevils when they soar over the Alkali Creek Canyon in just outside Vail, Colo., during a Zip Adventures tour. But the 2.5-hour, adrenalin-fueled tour begins even before the rider gets clipped into the harness. Visitors first encounter a Pinzgauer, an Austrian-made, 6-wheel-drive, all-terrain vehicle that takes them to the six zip lines. The lines range from 250ft to 1,000ft in length and whisk riders upwards of 200 feet above the historic canyon for amazing views of mountains, raging rivers and towering trees.
