They are stuck in the past " Plantation mentality "

I am reminded of the Roma and Sinti in Europe. We used to call them "Gypsies' but this name is no longer politically correct. Roma and Sinti have a formidable reputation of sorts. They roam the whole of Europe in their caravans and engage in niche activities such as sharpening knives or repairing pots.

One wonders how they manage to maintain their large extended families. Of course, crime is not always absent from their economic endeavours. They have a reputation as thieves, beggars and con artists. the more enterprising among them steal cars or burgle homes.

There are some settled and assimilated Roma and Sinti. but the majority prefers to pursue their traditional nomadci way of life. Some from the former communist East have grown excessively wealthy in recent years; they roam Western Europe, burgle homes, steal cars and resell them in the former East. Some even have settled down in Bosnia, Macedonia, Slovenia and own rambling villas there. But they wouldn't want to coexist among non-Roma in the same village.

In point of fact I do not need to wonder - police reports about Roma and Sinti crimes are common. A German TV team for example visited a Roma village in Bosnia and saw cars with German number plates stolen previously in Germany. The cars of the team were pelted with stones.
