A woman later told police that a woman in her eighties came to her for help, saying wild dogs were trying to attack an abandoned girl nearby.
The two women found large stones to drive the dogs away.
The blanket wrapping the baby was said to have been torn apart by the animals.
The baby was thankfully unharmed, but she had suffered from the cold, police were quoted as saying.
The woman in her fifties took the baby home to feed and bathe it before contacting the police.
The report did not say if the mother will face punishment.
