(CGTN) Teachers have tried various ways to check whether or not students are back to their dormitories on time. In east China’s Zhejiang Province, a college is reportedly launching a facial recognition system to increase the effectiveness of the late dorm check. However, though it may make dorm keepers lives easier, its also sparked controversy among students, as the new set of rules have different standards for males and females.

The new rule says that female students should return to their dormitories before 22:00 p.m., confirmed through facial recognition, however, the deadline for male students to return is 24:00 p.m., a two hour difference. Latecomers will be charged one yuan (two US cents) for every minute past the deadline.

While someone praise the school for using advanced technology, others cast doubt on its double standard for their male and female students.

The school's defense is that the earlier deadline for females is to ensure their safety, and added that the monetary penalty is the same across both sexes.

Someone got their currency conversion wrong. 1 yuan is 15 cents US, so 2 yuan is 30 cents US.
