Moon cake is a symbol of chinese culture. We took some in 1984 the taste was not that much attractive ...

Yes, it's a symbol of Chinese culture, but it has become so commercialised that the cultural  part is fast forgotten and replaced by greed, an opportunity for the greedy merchants to make a fast buck with their outlandish wasteful packaging, and for the Chinese to buy influence, "guanxu" , gifting elaborately wrapped boxes to bosses and people of influence.

You are in China, where pork is a staple, and many dishes and confectioneries are cooked with pork or pork related products.  Just because you don't see a piece of pork in your mooncake it does not mean there is no trace of  pork in it.  The Chinese often use lard, ie pork oil, to cook, and even use that to knead the dough that goes to make mooncakes; that makes the mooncakes smell nicer, and Chinese consumers like it. To be on the safe side, it is best to check with the manufacturer. Even deepfried confectioneries are often fried in lard.  And the labeling on the boxex are of no help, it does not specify the oil used, not as transparent as in the West, where even a trace of peanut or soy in biscuits must be mentioned in the label.
It is hoped that the food safety authority would pay more attention to food labeling, for the bnefit of those who cant eat pork, and for those who can, but prefer that their food is not cooked in unhealthy lard!
