For Chinese parents who think that the Chinese educational system focuses too much on rote memorization and does not teach students to think critically, Sino-foreign joint universities that bring top-notched education to China offer them a better option. Both Duke and New York University are building campuses in the Shanghai area to offer full-time programs to students there, and executive education courses are already a proven success. The Paper.cn also reports that Zhengzhou, capital city of China's Henan province, is to build a university in collaboration with the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). Are Sino-foreign joint universites the trend?

And I wonder if these parents know the difference between rote learning and Western-style studying? As soon as their son or daughter is enrolled they will want to monitor their child's "progress" at school. But with old-fashioned concepts of checking on a child's learning progress the parents will be disappointed.

Besides, I wonder: does China really need more universities? It doesn't have many good vocational schools and still needs professionals with a sound practical training rather than mere academic degrees. Why not open the minds of people and the market to useful educations worth investing in?
