An 9-month-old baby became the first in Canada to have “U” for "undetermined" listed as their sex on their health card. This is possibly the first health card in the world not to have a gender designation. Germany first offered a third category for parents to choose outside the standard M or F with – 'no gender' – back in 2013.

Following the trend in recognition of differing genders and sexes (which are not the same thing), Facebook, a prominent social media platform has allowed its users to choose their preferred pronouns on the website. This may include: him, her, or they, among many others.

It has become customary on different platforms to establish one's chosen pronouns as well. With the important role that gender plays in a person's life, what right does another have to assign them one?

Perhaps other countries and media platforms will soon follow suit with Canada and Facebook's progress.

Perhaps a better idea would have been to ask the doctor to check it's chromosomes at birth so that the child could grow up understanding it's role in life.

it's chromosomes at birth

Sex is an extremely complicated subject, and often can most accurately be determined by chromosomal testing (there are many people born with chromosomal anomalies that may influence not only their physical form, but also which gender they choose to identify later on).

However, I am not sure what a child's chromosomes have to do with their "role in life". Their decided "role" has little to do with their chromosome and more to do with their beliefs, passions, and strengths.

If that is true then gender is not natural but taught.

In many ways, yes! That is why this "no gender" option was introduced at all, so as to give children the freedom of choice. Children are "taught" to choose the pink clothing or blue trucks from birth, when babies are given either pink or blue blankets. Parents may discourage their child from playing with dolls or trucks, this is all part of the "teaching" of gender.

The option to choose "no gender" gives the parents and the child more freedom in that regard.

Further, I doubt very much that a person's "role in life" = gender. That seems to be an extremely narrowed view of life.
