Actually it's about hydropower.

Forty percent of Bhutan's GDP comes from export of its hydropower to India. That export is dependent on India's new investment in Bhutan's hydropower plants to be made up of 60% grant and 40% loan.

But in delaying the new plants, India has caused their prices to increase by 200-300%; furthermore, the financing structure was reversed to 60-70% as loans and the interest rates have also gone up so that the net profit per unit electricity that Bhutan sells to India has been falling since 2007 causing Bhutan to head towards a debt crisis.

Meanwhile the India-Bhutan treaty locks in the dependence of this small country while it faces an uncertain economic future. Which was why Bhutan had had twenty four rounds of direct talks with China so far on recognition and investments.

This must have riled New Delhi which was why India abruptly cut off fuel subsidies to Bhutan just before the Bhutan general elections were due to be held in 2013.

Today Bhutan fears India will absorb it as India had absorbed Sikkim in 1975.

What hypocrites you Chins are!

The Sikkimese had a plebiscite to determine their future under Indian rule and they overwhelmingly voted for their status quo. Now you are pretending that the Sikkimese were "absorbed" into India the way the hapless Tibetans were by China... Bhutan is one of two Himalayan countries that have escaped being occupied by China and they have never been threatened by India.

Today Nepal is fast becoming a Chinese colony. Does Bhutan really envy Nepal???
