The Iberian Empires of Catholic Spain and Portugal colonized much of the Americas where they imported 90% of the African slaves to work their mines and fields in their New World colonies. But they didn’t industrialize their backward economies nor did they invent any industrial technologies. In fact, something like half of the silver mined in Mexico and Peru ended up in China because Chinese traders actively participated in the Spanish Galleon Trade where they sold Chinese-made luxury goods in exchange for Mexico silver. That trade went on for almost three centuries, ending only when the Spanish colonies in the Americas became independent in the 19th century.
