The test production was carried out by Blue Whale 1, the world’s largest and deepest drilling rig. Built last year, the domestically designed and constructed platform could operate in almost any waters in the world.

Methane hydrate is a very clean source of energy. With one cubic metre of the “ice” equalling more than 160 cubic metres of natural gas, some researchers have estimated the global reserve of methane hydrate is twice as much as that of other known fossil fuels, enough for human consumption for 1,000 years.

May 8th 2017, Japan's trade ministry on Mondayreported success in producing gas last week by extractingmethane gas from methane hydrate deposits offshore Japan'scentral coast.   The tests being run at two different wells are the firstsince 2013, when Japan achieved the world's first-everextraction of gas from offshore deposits of methane hydrate, afrozen gas known as "flammable ice".Japan's first methane hydrate testsin 2013 ended abruptly after less than a week due to problemswith sand flowing into the well.

I read the same in today's South China Morning Post but the reporter went on to say that there is no commercial production at the moment as the price would not be competitive.

Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte said Friday China's leaders told him they were prepared to go to war over competing claims in the South China Sea.

Duterte, who met with Chinese President Xi Jinping and Premier Li Keqiang in Beijing this week, said he was making the threat public in response to domestic criticism he was being too weak with China over the dispute.

"I really said it to their face. That is ours and we intend to drill oil there," Duterte said, revealing his previously unreported plans to explore for natural resources in disputed areas.
"And they told me: 'Well, we're friends. We do not want to quarrel with you. We want to maintain the present warm relationship. But if you force the issue we'll go to war.'"
