One way of getting to know a people and their country is for me to read fiction by their authors.  ...

I agree, and have done so. Along this line I have read almost all of China's classics... a very arduous endeavor, but well worth it

Out of date media. Do you still ride a horse or use candels at home?

Better to ride a horse than ride candles

I pity you. Too bad you cannot see the vaue of books. Also, no reason to get insulting

I hve yet to study Li Bai, and you cannot just read such literature for entertainment, you have to study it. I found that when I was reading the Dream of a Red Mansion. My greatest pleasure in reading Chinese literature comes from reading modern fiction such s Jian Rong's "Wolf Totem'. I also found a couule of Chinese detective story authors. Quite capable. Think of "Death of a Red Heroine", for example.

Chinese classics are not exactly my cup of tea but I have tried some. "The Dream of a Red Mansion" was a letdown, though. I know the book is charming to read in CHINESE but it is not  the same in translation. One great book of modern fiction is Jing Rong's "Wolf Totem". I can also recommend a couple of Chinese authors of detective novels. Think of "Death of a Red Heroine".
