Cui Fenghua, from Harbin City in the northern province of Heilongjiang, traveled 17 countries in Latin America on 150,000 yuan (US$21,680) in over a year after she graduated with a Master's from Beijing Foreign Studies University in 2014.

Cui quit her job and went couch-surfing alone from the beginning of 2015. She variously worked as a teacher, translator, librarian and even volunteered for environmental protection in Africa before she started her journey.

Cui traveled from the US to the North Pole by staying at homes of locals who offered free accommodation for backpackers on couch-surfing Website.

Cui began to offer fellow travelers free accommodation in her own home after she came back from her journey. She has received couch-surfers from the US, Russia, France, Poland, Switzerland, Sri Lanka, Venezuela, Kazakhstan and Indonesia.
