As a chairman from Alibaba Group, Jack Ma tweeted on March 7th that the Chinese government should treat counterfeiting as seriously as it takes drunk driving. But, nowadays, the vast majority of those who make and sell counterfeits in China do not bear legal liability, so they reap too much profits. He slammed sellers as well as producers of fake goods, suggesting the sellers who have sold one counterfeit should be jailed for seven days and producers who produce one counterfeit should be charged as criminal offense. What measures should the government take to tackle counterfeiters?

As long as the Chinese rulers do not respect intellectual property rights there will be no chance that any law will have bite.

There's a few things that could work, firstly massive fines and also prison terms (at least 10 years), or the government could simply seize a counterfeiters house(s), assets of his wife, parents (if anything was gifted to them) or children and then a lengthy prison term and massive fine.   It's also not so stupid an idea to fine them the equivalent to double or triple the value of the non counterfeited goods you make,  for example, 10,000 LV bags are counterfeited then the counterfeiter has to pay a fine equal to the cost of 20,000 LV bags (retail price).  Second time offending, 25 years in a hard labour camp or a 9mm bullet to the base of the skull.
