I often criticise Chinese knee-jerk reactions which advocate a ban on everything. However, in this case it may be justified. There is a dramatic rise in the keeping of animals as pets here, and many Chinese families care for pets as part of their families. However there are many who buy a pet without much understanding of the needs of that pet or the responsibility needed. (see my blog: They eat pets don't they?) For many Chinese people animals have no value unless they work or provide food or furs. As such they can be used in any way without any feelings of guilt, remorse etc.   But attitudes will change slowly as the population becomes more affluent and educated.

This stupid woman should be jailed for the rest of her life. And the authorities should learn their lesson too: how can someone run a pet shop and sell exotic and expensive animals to such country yokels? To run a shop you should be required to own a relevant business licence and the authorities must ensure that a business owner abides by laws. Pet shops should be restricted. They should not have the right to sell animals to just about anyone.
