China has done well in the 2012 and 2015 Pisa studies, as have other countries. But let us put things into the correct perspective:

- Only 72 economies took part in 2015 (and only 65 did in 2012). The world has almost 200 countries. China is represented by three different and separate economies: China, Hong Kong and Macau.

The two special administrative regions of Hong Kong and Macau have Western-type education systems, yet the children in urban Shanghai and two selected provinces performed very well too.
But where would China rank if pupils in Shaanxi and Hainan, Inner Mongolia and Heilongjiang had been included?

There is little doubt China as a whole would have done pretty well but perhaps it would have fallen a few notches behind other COnfucian economies such as Taiwan, Vietnam, S Korea and Japan.

Still it is pretty self-evident that Confucian countries as a group do outstandingly well in the Pisa studies.

Is this because of their punitive teaching methods? Is this because of a common DNA?

Here is one important conclusion: the pupils have only been compared in MATHS, SCIENCES and READING.

These three key subjects were chosen not by a competent education body but by an organisation which promotes ECONOMICS: the O.E.C.D.

If McDonald's were to evaluate the suitability of young job candidates world-wide, they might want to test middle-school pupils in the countries of McDonald's market; would they choose maths, sciences and reading skills to be key to earning a job with McDonald's?

Probably not. Any association of professionals would have criteria that differ from the ones adopted by O.E.C.D. For example if the world unionb of chefs were to follow suit, they would probably have very different priorities too. In many occupations, you don't have any need for scientific knowledge. Who needs a high maths proficiency? No salesclerks do. Therefore, the choice of these three key study areas is highly arbitrary and not necessarily helpful.

Studying Australian law is useless in China. In the Prison Island there are no laws.
