The latest PISA results have been published. 72 economies have taken part in them. FOr the first time, the tests were done on computers. This changed the conditions notably. But the ranking of the 72 economies has been only marginally been affected. China again is not Number one...

In point of fact, China stands at a respectable place, ranking No. Ten out of 72 participating nations...

However, China does not seem to make progress. Nor did Gewrmany, compared with the results it produced three years earlier.

The whole format of the PISA tests should be looked at more closely.

There needs to be a healthy debate about the meaning of such rankings. They should not be capitalised by politicians. I wanted to preempt the usual bragggadocio about the superior dedication of Chinese learners to academic work. They are not better dedicated to learnning than pupils elsewhere. They simply have no freedom to do otherwise.
