...and THAT is exactly what the problem is with China's educational  system!

And yet the Chinese education system appears to excel in producing mathematicians, engineers and high IQs. Perhaps it's a trade off.

I cannot fully agree with you on that. Yes, China does produce some brilliant people, but not in comparison to the vast numbers of citizens. However, China is great in copying.

While China may not be inundated with brilliant people the talent that she has created appears to be a major force in civil engineering internationally. So something is working.

That is what the state-owned media proudly proclaim every day, but frankly speaking, I have never met any of these Chinese maths geniuses.

Besides, the Chinese do not produce maths theories, unlike Westerners. They oly faithfully replicate their findings.

Bad system

It's not the system's fault; it is the culture's.

...and THAT is exactly what the problem is with China's educational  system!

Rote learing is a simplist's prescription for "good education" because he can simplistically rationalise that the more you memorise the higher your education is.

This then leads parents to condemn their children to spending all their spae time "learning". Playing is frowned upon; sports are not encouraged; the handy skills that we acquire in the West ae not promoted because an "educated" person does not use his hands but his memory. Conclusion: Chinese kids are gang-pressed into bootcamp schools that kill their time between waking and going to sleep. They grow up experiencing no freedom, no right to choose, no activities other than sitting stilland absorbing dead letters.

When they are deemed to be "adult" they have stunted mental growth and know alittle of many things, but nothing that matters and nothing in an extensive way.

The Chinese rulers probably know why they prefer their subjects to be like this: these people are meek, weak and won't rebel easily.
