The correct answer is A , but what's wrong with B ?  thanks for answering my question

Both are correct and the difference is subtle. A suggests a short-duration action, B implies a longer duration action.

Or "had done" suggests a completed action, "had been doing" suggests an action that was not completed but is not continuing into the present (she stopped in the middle of doing it).  I believe that a similar distinction between complete and incomplete actions is made in Chinese with 了.
