Let's look at what's at stake. China is a major facilitator in world economics with virtually every country on earth. It also has one third of the worlds population on the island. It is also huge in terms of land area.

Therefore, if China is attacked via the south china sea, other countries economy and the world population will also be badly affected.

Due to China's large size, anyone hoping to cause any significant damage to such a large population and world trade, would probably need the heaviest of military assaults i.e nuclear weapons. That can be launched from ships disguised as civillian or military in nature. Calculate the launching range of a nuclear missile from a ship and you know enemy ships need not be close to land to do harm.

Such enemies, themselves are very formidable..... at least equal to China.

Who else in the region has the military know how and resources to guard the such a land area ? Are they reliable? Can they afford to pay their sodliers and navy? Is there any country in the region with a military formidable enough to fend off such a powerful foe spread over such a large sea area? Only China is strong enough and has the resources and knowledge to protect such waters.

Therefore it makes sense that China protects the south China seas against nuclear assaults in its capital. It ensures the safety to such a large number of people and ensure global trade is safe.
