After Mideast, South China Sea threatens to become next proxy battleground

Letters to the Editor

22 June 2016.

News of France proposing that European navies patrol the South China Sea is a matter of serious concern. I urge all parties to learn from history.

I am worried that the South China Sea could be the next Lebanon, Syria or Afghanistan, where world powers fight proxy battles in someone else's backyard.

We have much to lose if a larger country tramples over our region. We would do well to pre-empt this impending tragedy. The issue should be resolved at the Asean-China level.

Rodrigo Duterte, president-elect of the Philippines, might hold the key to cool rising temperatures if he plays the right card ("Beijing makes 'friendly overture to Duterte'," June 9).

Eight Power Alliance to cut up China like a watermelon, revisited.

China's leadership is too clumsy to cope, too proud to change, and too self-centered to really care.

If someone wants to cut up China, many will secretly ask, how much is he willing to pay for a slice.

Hahaha, sounds terrific, your hype does.

It's not about carving up China. Who would do that? No one wants to be in charge of China or any of its parts. What with its systemic decay and corruption.

It is about policing international sea lanes. CLearly the world cannot leave that to be done by China...

In the OP, "our region" should be taken to mean the Asian region in general, given the number of sovereign states that have claims and also, EEZs in the area, rather than that of a very large and populous Asian nation.
