The provision of larger than normal women-only parking spaces in Hangzhou has stirred up an online debate, with netizens torn over whether or not they are sexist.

In an interview with the Qianjiang Evening News, the manager of the service station said that the spaces were provided especially for female drivers who have difficulties parking in reverse.

The spaces are 1.5 times larger than normal parking spots and are outlined with pink lines and a female icon. For now there are only eight out of the 370 spaces available, but the manager has said that if they are successful he would consider adding more.

The insinuation that only female drivers are bad enough to require dedicated extra large parking spaces struck a nerve with some who found the whole scheme to be sexist. Many vented their frustration on Weibo.

"Where are the feminists? This is such obvious gender discrimination," exclaims @潘大官人啊.

"If you're going to discriminate against women like this, why don't we get larger parking spaces when we're taking our driving tests then?" said @一生顽主.

"If this news happened abroad would you all think that it was being considerate?" writes @一只公主dog.

Others fought back against the critics, stating that they were appreciative of the extra space and praised the service station management.

"They're not saying that women have to park there," said @吖兴快跑. "They're just offering them to women who aren't good at parking. It's a great idea! Where's the discrimination?"

If that happened in the UK the feminists would be crying foul.

Most drivers in China cannot reverse, and certainly never try to reverse into a parking space. This applies to men and women. Perhaps having wider parking spaces for all drivers here is needed! Oh I forgot, Chinese drivers park where they want regardless of inconvenience to others.
