This is the most exciting news of the week.  I had no idea that it cut the travel down by 30 days,  ...

You should have followed the Europeans for the last 70 years, mate. Railways have played a major role in European development till now. You Yanks have, unfortunately gone the opposite way, transferring people from traincars and tramways to private vehicles and goods to lorries. YOu still have the world's longest railway network; it is improving again but it hits on resistance from interested parties evertywhere. You are a litigous people, that is why high-speed trains are so slow in coming. I note that Alstom garnered a contract to supply electric trains for the Eastern Corridor and Siemens has delivered some new locos, but overall you are behind Europe.

In EUrope they opened a 50'km tunnel under the Alps earlier this year; a second one is currently under construyction in Austria and will be 62 kms long. Trains often run at 30 minute intervals between major cities. They are fast and clean and safe. Unlike in China, you do not have to buy a ticket for a seat on any particular train. You buy your ticket and hop on any train that travels to your destination. Airports are connected to downtown areas by railway; in the Alps many towns are car-free but are reachable by train.
