Why does inventiveness have to be linked to high-tech gadgets? High tech is a recent addition to humanity's creativity; it was made possible only after most avenues of improving life for people in lower and simpler levels had been exhausted. High tech also is much easier to manage once you understand how it works. If you have a critical mass of human brains that have internalised the principles of how things work it is merely a matter of time before they come up with indigenous new products. Conversely speaking, Australia and S Africa do not have the critical mass of brains specialised in high technologies, hence you cannot expect them to pioneer much. Then again, most countries in the developing world are significantly larger than Australia or S Africa, yet they don't seem to have the ability to master even basic technologies. Why is that?

Just look at China's own development: it got most of its impulses from the outside. It has always been a sleepy giant prone to being challenged by smaller neighbours. It took nomadic peoples' skills and knowhow to overwhelm China on two occasions in the last 700 years, and each time the Chinese had to learn from their conquerors. Before the Mongolians came, the Chinese knew they needed a good infantry and they waged a war to gain the right to be supplied Heavenly Horses from the Ferghana Valley.

It is also true of metallurgy. Europe used bronze for utilitarian purposes, making tools, while the Shang a couple of centuries later only started using bronze for the benefit of the ruling head, as ritual drink vessels and religious artefacts. When iron became used widely in EUrope, the Chinese peasants still had no metal tools, and iron eventually came three centuries after the Hallstatt culture was at its zenith.

There was no advancement in these inventions till Asia met the West then the West took these inventions to areas the Chinese could never dream of.

Let me repeat what I'd just wrote:

When you say "West", does that include Australia? I don't mean to disrespect Australia -- it's a nice country Down Under known for its Bondi Beach and beach babes -- but Australia is just a nice country Down Under known for its Bondi Beach and beach babes.

You can talk all you want about how Westerners like Alexander Graham Bell invented the analog telephone but that's so 19th century. You can talk all you want about how Western companies like Motorola invented the mobile phone or how Nokia invented the smartphone but those two Western companies are no longer in the mobile phone business. You see - Dusty -- we're no longer in the 19th or 20th century; we're now in the 21st century. If you talk to Western companies like Nokia in Finland and Ericsson in Sweden and ask them who are their most formidable competitors in the world, they'll tell you that it is Huawei and ZTE, both Chinese companies based in Shenzhen, China.

So can you tell me -- Dusty -- are there ANY Australian companies able to compete globally against the big boys in the global telecommunications industry? Please don't talk about this "West" and that "West"; talk about Australian companies in YOUR Western country not foreign companies in OTHER Western countries. After all, just because Australia is a Western country does not mean that Australian companies are capable of competing against Western and East Asian companies in the global telecommunications industry. Don't tell me college graduates in Australia all end up becoming ... firefighters? To fight bonfires in Bondi Beach, perhaps? Is that the only industry Australia has?

Let me repeat what I'd just wrote:

I dont mean to burst your bubble mr SF guy but Hwawei notoriously has stolen all the intellectual property of US companies, copied everything they have produced, paid outrageous salaries to poach talent from western companies and steal the IP of other companies using the information these employees possess and their innovation is driven by foreign western talent bring paid ridiculous salaries to work and move there and come up with zillions of useless patents so they can sue their way to more revenue. So its safe to say you dont know what youre talking about. Everything in China tech today is stolen, literally or copied or coopted from foreign companies forced to join phony partnerships to operate in China and sell to Chinese customers

Huawei competes against Nokia and Ericsson in 4G/5G.

Huawei competes against HP and Cisco in the data center.
Huawei competes against Amazon in cloud computing.
Huawei competes against Google in AI.
Huawei competes against Apple and Samsung in smartphones.
Huawei competes against Qualcomm in 4G/5G chipsets.
Huawei competes against Intel and IBM in IoT.

And Huawei is winning the race to be the number one tech company in the world.
