My daughter came home today and told me that a couple of her friends mum's had enrolled their kids in summer camp in US for two weeks in August and that she wanted to go to summer camp too. As more Chinese parents plan overseas trips for their children, is this normal trend (by this I mean summer camp abroad)? Am I just falling into peer pressure here by saying yes just because her friends are doing it? Would you let your teen go abroad for a few weeks for camp?

To me, if here is clear theme for the camp that is suited to our criteria, and I can afford the expenditure for the trip, then I would agree the activity.

Another situation, in case of my kid insists on the idea of going out with classmates, maybe I would make a concession. But I would tell my child, I didn't support the activity that is not suitable to our family.

If you have enough time and money, and your daughter would love to go, then going to a summer camp is a good choice. I'm a Junior School student, I really want a chance to go abroad and study there. So, yes, maybe.

Yes. By all means send your daughter off to the USA if you want her to grow up thinking that life will always be free and easy. On the other hand, you might consider advising her to spend the summer break doing voluntary work somewhere where she would see the less glamorous side of life and, perhaps, gain a better perspective on how fortunate she is to have such caring parents. She would also learn some useful skills and enjoy the feeling of being useful to others.
