Motorcycle travel

Hey

I am a foreigner. I have been driving a 125cc scooter in Dongguan for the last 3.5 years. I am thinking about getting a 250cc big motorcycle and wander across China from one famous mountain to another. I really love the way Chinese mountain parks are laid out!
But, what do you guys think? I worry about the scooter getting stolen. And then I know that many big cities will not allow motorcycles. But it would be great to feel the wind blow and to wander down smaller roads and really "see" China.

Thanks

Don

Thanks

Thanks for your support! I still can't decide what to do.My "fantasy" rout is:. 1st, Tai Shan in SHandong. 2nd, Wutai Shan, Hua Shan and Bei Heng Shan in Shanxi. Then, Song Shan in Henan. And, Jiuhua Shan in Anhui. Then Nan Heng Shan in Hunan... maybe first Wudan in Hubei... then down to Yangshuo near Guilin.

BUT... I am still reading and looking over maps.

Take care

Don

Illegal! But fines vary.

I've been riding in Shandong for 3 years.

Some people said that death or amputation was almost certain, yet I've proved them wrong.

I've noticed fines vary between locations, having a licence, registration, insurance, plates and helmet are legal requirements, but where I live insurance is 100 yuan and the fine for not having it is 30 yuan!

I would keep away from very big cities, with harsh and expensive traffic fines. I imagine most places, especially small cities and country, no questions would be asked.

IIlegal, but fnes vary 2

It's illegal because riding out of region city district (if you have the wrong letter or provincial character on the number plate) is illegal but the fine is 20 yuan some say. Others say that the police can confiscate your bike.

I've tried travel on a 125 with panniers, it was dirty, slow hot, hard to find a cheap hotel. The problem is the small roads are badly marked and are very badly maintained sometimes. The big roads are quick but they are so dirty with all the trucks, dust, insects. Also I have a big fat arse and it gets numb after 1 hour. A touring bike  is best, st 1200? Illegal and un-affordable in China  Believe me, one day in and you'll be going home for a shower, unless you are very careful about planning your route.

p.s. If you do get a new bike, what would you get? I like the companies that have agreements with big Japanese comapnies as they use Japanese engine blueprints and parts manufactured here, eg WuYang Honda QJiang(suzuki).etc

How Thorough

Thanks for your good advice and example. I know what you mean about the dirt and diesel from the big trucks on the highways... I like the smaller roads and often see the best things when I am lost.
Ah... and then the numb butt blues... maybe an hour or two and you have to get off and "thaw out"...
Still, I love driving the motorcycle... but I remain uncertain if China is the place to pursue this kind of travel plan... but if I do, I will buy one of the bikes you suggested.

Thanks again and take care

Don

Maikemi Motorcycle Travel

Hi Maikemi,
I'm Chinese Canadian and i'll be going back to China either end 2007 or beginning of 2008 base on the job situationon a permanently base.  I have been in Canada for over 20 years and I'm searching for job in China now.  I do ride a motorcycle in Canada.  One of thing i really want to do when i'm in China is exactly what you posted.  I loved to travel around small roads as road trip around China and see the country.  Not sure if you can wait till I go back China but I like to join you travel around on bike. I would be looking to buy a bike too what do you recommend?  Do they have bigger bike than 250cc, i'm a super sport kind of person and now i'm riding a 500cc in Canada.
So technical i'm a foreigner but i look Chinese, can speak Cantonese and learning Mandarin now.  I can make out key words group (chicken, pig, beef, rice and veg) when go to restaurant . Yah definitely would be fun.  I'll let you do all the planning work then just join you .

peace

But not all Chinese cities ban on motocycle or motobike. By the way, you absolutly choose electric scooter as a traffic tools.
