your criteria for understanding culture is extremely limited, almost as if you have not moved beyond a school-book as to what constitutes 'culture'

Going to a pub is not an activity many people take part in, as there are so many other hobbies, interests and sports that people enjoy.
A business meeting would not take place in a pub, as it would be considered very inappropriate.
in fact, drinking alcohol during a business meeting would be very rare, unless it was a glass of wine with the meal.
I 'offended' Chinese hosts by refusing to drink alcohol at a business lunch, because it is was not the appropriate time or place to drink.

Equally i know many Chinese who don't like Ma Jiang - they consider it an old persons game, and should i make a superficial judgement on ALL Chinese people who play Ma Jiang i would say 'chinese people are all gamblers'.
it is like saying that all Chinese people know Kung fu and eat rice 3 times a day, and that is a way of thinking that belongs to the 19th century, not to intelligent adults who would be thinking for themselves.

do yourself a favour and read beyond the incorrect text-books, internet and tv which is feeding you wrong information.
