The latest proposal by China’s legislators to lower the minimum legal age for marriage has been met with confusion and ridicule amid the population crisis.

Some members of the National People’s Congress Standing Committee proposed last Wednesday to reduce the age threshold to 18, from 22 for men and 20 for women.

At present, the law stipulates a minimum age of 22 for men and 20 for women

The one who proposed the change, admitted that it would not on its own reverse a decline in the number of people getting married. But he said it could help, alongside other policies, to address the issue of China’s ageing population amid falling birth rates.

What do you think of the suggestion?

Lowering it to 18 is not going to reverse the population crisis; even the deputy who proposed it admitted. At 22 for men and 21 for women, it is already very low, resulting in immature youngsters tying the knot without realising the family burden they have embarked on. That partly accounts for the very high divorce rate in China, forcing the courts to decline divorce till the couple had spent a  month or two re-considering it.

or move to uncle Sam which is not advisable.

With parental consent and judicial approval, a person can marry under the age of eighteen but no lower than the age of 12 for females and 14 for males as it is the legislated minimum in this state. Age of consent for statutory rape law is 16 years old. The age of consent is eighteen
