Here in China if you are bloody minded enough and are prepared to spend what feels like half a lif ...

HM gov wanted a witness to the fact that I was still alive. They suggested amongst others that an officer of a bank would be an acceptable witness and all they had to do was to identify me from my passport, watch me sign my name and sign to state that they had witnessed me doing so. Despite the bank listing this as a free service they claimed that they hadn't got the authority and needed to consult head office (in their own goodtime). I lost that argument. In the UK they'd have just stung me for 20 quid and signed with no fuss.

I wired money from overseas to my wife's bank account but the BoC refused to credit it to her. Reason? Filling in the form at the bank abroad, I put her name in the usual order common in the West, i.e. first name and last name. Of course, her bank account number was correct.

The money was returned eventually minus a hefty proportion for "fees" and exchange.
