Or bungling their way there?

After congratulating Kim Jong-Un as The Sexiest Man Alive For 2012 (Mistaking an Onion article for the real thing) and just recently publishing images from a fetish porn video as photos from a "Western Execution" (And calling it "Actual Scenes From An Inmate's Execution") now comes this misstep...

Xinhua mistakes a satirical account of Jeff Bezos purchase of the Washington Post for 250 million dollars as an accidental mouse click and publishes it (verbatim) as a real news story. It took an employee to find it in The New Yorker and decide it would be news worth publishing, an editor to approve it, a translator to get it into Chinese and someone to post it online. And how many more saw this piece along the way from bumbling start to humiliating finish? Did no one question that you can't simply click a mouse and buy a newspaper?

It's one thing for a private newspaper to make such a humiliating blunder, it's another for a state run news organization like Xinhua which represents the nation. Foreigners are laughing at China by association. (And so are China's netizens as this goes viral) How does bungling like this happen? And continue to happen?

Is it simply a matter of "Lost In Translation"? Or is there an unbridled zeal to embarrass the "West" that ends up with China wearing the proverbial egg on face?

There are only two infinite things --- the universe and human stupidity and I am not sure about the first.

People make mistakes and then people make stupid mistake. If one can learn from it then it is not mistake but a lesson.

Humor is one of the hardest things to cross the culture barrier.  That being said,  i still cant understand how anybody asain or western could think that short round " Kim Jong-Un" is the sexiest man alive.

It just goes to show how nothing is beyond belief when it comes to the lost souls of the west.

"lost souls of the west"/ That's funny, you described yourself quite well. Except for the soul part, commies don't have souls.
