For me one of the most disappointing things about life in the 21st century is that racism is very much alive and kicking in most societies. Racism manifests itself in many ways, from name calling to genocide and all points in between.
So what is Racism exactly? Racism is the belief that one “race”is naturally or otherwise superior to another. Racism these days is often intertwined with “Nationalism”, or the belief that one nation or another is superior to all others.
Sadly for mankind there seems to be little recognition ofthe truth, that we are all descended from a very small population of ape like creatures that evolved and then wandered about in what we know call Africa some 4-5 million years ago. DNA evidence and fossil evidence is absolutely clear on this point and while quite a few religions have their own creation myths to anyone who looks and studies the scientific evidence with an open mindthe proof is irrefutable. Eventually this small band of humans made their way out of Africa and slowly populated the globe we call Earth.
So why does racism still occur? The reasons for racism are many and complex, certainly well beyond a short piece of writing like this. In a nutshell, racismis fuelled by a lack of education which leads to insecurity, regurgitation of parental beliefs and the phobias of society. Racism is also found when people cannot and will not let go of past events, a failure to move forward and a mindset that still lays the blame for events that frequently occurred generations ago is a major contributor. Stereotyping is another major factor in the racist’s arsenal of hatred, as is a blind unswerving belief and conviction that their views are the only ones that are "right". Most racists also suffer from what could best be described as parrot syndrome, often parroting what others say so they feel better about their own insecurities and fears.
In recent years there has been a new form of racism creeping out of the woodpile, that is best described as insipient nationalism. This is often fostered by politicians and certain sectors of the populist press as nationalism, and it is a tried and tested method to divert the attention of the people from political or religious chicanery. Nationalism is often confused with patriotism and while being patriotic is not always a bad thing, nationalism is often the cause of wars and untold suffering of innocent people.
Racists online are a real problem and frequently derail quality discussion of many topics. Many online racists are seriously deluded individuals who express pure bile and hatred towards entire ethnic groups without any admission that the vast majority of people have no axe to grind against any other group of people. Such attacks often take the form of baiting, trolling, stereotyping, derogatory comments about other nationalities or ethnic groups. In reality all such people do is show to the world that they are stupid, ignorant, mentally incompetent and that they cannot think in a rational and logical manner.
So are you a racist or not?
