An Australian teenager who stabbed an Indian student to death in an attack that sparked a diplomatic row with India has been jailed for 13 years.
The 17-year-old, who cannot be named, admitted killing Nitin Garg in a Melbourne park in January 2010.
The attack - and a string of others against Indian nationals in Australia - caused anger in India over what some commentators called racist violence.
Indian student numbers dropped in the wake of the row.
Mr Garg, an accounting graduate, was stabbed multiple times as he walked to work in Melbourne.
The teenager, who pleaded guilty to murder and attempted robbery, had been trying to steal his mobile phone.
Judge Paul Coghlan said that the crime was opportunistic rather than racist, and that Mr Garg had been an "innocent and random victim".
The teenager will be eligible for parole in eight years.
Mr Garg's death followed several muggings and beatings of Indian nationals in Australia, and reports of educational scams targeting Indian students.
These led to street protests in Melbourne and Sydney in 2009, and sharp comments from the Indian government.
Delhi issued a travel advisory for Melbourne in the wake of Mr Garg's death.
The Australian police said in mid-2009 that they believed some of the attacks were racially motivated and some were opportunistic.

The silence from RUSSIA is deafening

Syria's main opposition group, the Syrian National Council, described this weeks killings as "brutal massacres and genocide," saying it has urged the U.N. Security Council to hold an emergency meeting on Syria. The SNC also asked the international community to help protect Syrian citizens.

Syrian troops have killed 111 people in one of the deadliest incidents since the uprising against President Bashar Assad's regime began in March, activists said Wednesday.

"It was an organized massacre. The troops surrounded people, then killed them," said Rami Abdul-Rahman, head of the organization.

In a statement, the rights organization said government forces surrounded about 150 local residents and shot them with bullets and tank shells for more than five hours.

"The United States is deeply disturbed by credible reports that the Assad regime continues to indiscriminately kill scores of civilians and army defectors, while destroying homes and shops and arresting protesters without due process," the White House said in a statement read by spokesman Jay Carney, warning that the international community could take more steps against Syria.

It said 111 bodies were counted in the local mosque

French Foreign Ministry spokesman Bernard Valero said "everything must be done to stop this murderous spiral into which Bashar Assad is leading his people more every day."

"The situation is absolutely getting worse by the day"

Turkey's Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu said "it is unacceptable" that so many people were killed after Syria agreed to an Arab League plan to halt the bloodshed.

Latest Syria killings draw international ire

The German government's human rights commissioner, Markus Loening, called for an immediate end to violence against deserters and demonstrators.

The silence . . . . the silence is deafening . . . . .

The 2005 Cronulla riots were a series of sectarian clashes and mob violence originating in Cronulla, New South Wales, and spreading, over the next few nights, to additional Sydney suburbs.

On 4 December, 2005, a group of volunteer surf lifesavers were assaulted by a group of young men of Middle Eastern appearance, with several other violent assaults occurring over the next week. These incidents were widely reported and commented on in Sydney media. An initially peaceful crowd gathered in the morning of Sunday, 11 December, 2005, and, by midday, approximately 5,000 people gathered at Cronulla beach to protest against a recent spate of violence against locals.

However, fuelled by alcohol, the crowd turned to violence when a young man of "Middle Eastern appearance"[1] was spotted on the beach. He was surrounded by a crowd outside a local hotel and attacked. Retaliatory riots also took place that night and on subsequent nights, resulting in extensive property damage and several more assaults, including one stabbing and even some attacks against ambulance and police officers.

The attacks were widely condemned by local, state and federal members of parliament, police, local community leaders, and residents of Cronulla and adjacent areas. A large number of arrests were made over the subsequent months, from both the initial riot on 11 December and the retaliatory riots held over the subsequent nights. The incidents tarnished Australia's international image, with several countries issuing travel warnings.
