This is really a staggering statistic. That a country as prosperous as the U.S. has that many children without homes is just unthinkable.
One in 50 children is homeless in the United States every year, according to a report released Tuesday.
The report, by the National Center on Family Homelessness, analyzed data from 2005-06 and found that more than 1.5 million children were without a home.

"These numbers will grow as home foreclosures continue to rise," Ellen Bassuk, president of the center, said in a statement.

The study ranked states on their performance in four areas: the extent of child homelessness, the risk for it, child well-being and the state's policy and planning efforts.

I was homeless for a brief period after my son was born.

I had medical issues and had to stop working the last few months of my pregnancy.

The lack of income made us behind on rent and we were evicted when my son was 2 1/1 weeks old.

We had all of our stuff in the car - well as much as possible.  But we did get help from friends letting us stay there.  It didn't take long, I was able to go back to work early.  My son was four weeks old and they let me come back to work, so that was good.

You don't see kids living on the streets.  Not any young kids.  No where.  They will be taken by children services if you don't have a home or someplace to house them.

You can be considered 'homeless' and live in other's homes.  I know of this guy in a small town, the town drunk - he is homeless.  But the town takes care of him.  People alternate taking him home for the night and so on.

They have better social systems / welfare than the US too.

But you're right about the inequality.  That is why I support the protesters.

My avatar is of a protester in california who built a tree house right in front of city hall.

The people in the US, but also in Europe, who got the guts to stand for their countries to free themself from the diktat of the markets have to be supported by all of us.
We know things might not change, but it would be so nice to see speculators trembling in front of the masses....

Are the US released from their inherent hate of anything linked to socialism? What's hapening there?? Are you bored about beeing ruled by coorporations? It's awsome!

There are still those.

I think most people realize that something needs to change.  We just can't agree on what that is.

Some of the hardliner conservatives just keep spewing the same crap that we've heard and see fail over and over.

You have to ask yourself if the homeless is cause by the system by the person. I believe in strong government but not charitable government. It's your responsibility to find a job and feed your family. It's the government's job to create this opportunity. It is not government's job to feed you unless in very special cases.
