The global electricity generation capacity is estimated at 4,000 giga but operating at 75% capacity - ie. 3,000 giga!

Electricity generation is mostly powered by (1) Coal, (2) Natural Gas, (3) Hydroelectricity, (4) Nuclear, (5) other fuel, biomass, renewables!

China by end of 2011 - will have 1050 giga capacity and nearly fully utilized!
That's 30% of the global generation!
That's how China manage to nearly monopolized the assembly, process, oem, hypermarket export industry!

cheerios!

I checked a government website: U.S. Energy Information Administration
Wikipedia (original source: cia factbook)
and another website.

the latest data

the world's total electricity capacity is around 4,500 GW (2007 figures)
U.S.A 995 GW
China 716 GW
Japan 279 GW
Russia 221 GW
India 159 GW
Germany 140Gw
Canada 125 GW
Braizl 100 GW
South Korea 79 GW
...

electricity produced in 2008 TWH (the whole year)
USA  4,369 TWH
China 3,457 TWH

World's total 20,261 TWH

.

Please double check your datum with the data in my post.

+++++++++++
capacity: 716/4500 = 16% (2007 figure)
Annually Generation 3457/20261 = 17% (2008 figure)

You can check my data source in the number 2 post.

I also made a pic of the monthly electricity consumption in the following.

h ttp://bbs.chinadaily.com.cn/viewthread.php?gid=2&tid=700541&extra=page%3D2&page=3

+++
So ...electricity capacity, generation, consumption...none of them would be 40%.

Okay!

Let's redo the estimation!
Apparently world wide installed electricity generating capacity is  4,000 giga (2010).
About 20% of global installed capacity is hydroelectricity or 780 giga (2010), most of the increase is due to China's effort. Now China possess about 1/3 of the global electricity generation!

Coal is the most popular source of energy for electricity generation = <6,000 million tonnes of thermal coal was mined!
Biggest user is No. 1 China = >2,250 million tonnes, No. 2 USA =>1,100 million tonnes, No.3 Europe =>600 million tonnes. SO, Thermal Coal electricity generation, global = < 2,000 giga capacity

LNG is the next largest fuel use in electricity generation = >700 giga. LNG use total 1,500 million tonnes.

Nuclear is tne next largest fuel = >550 giga.

China has 1,050 giga (2011) or 25% of the global installed capacity BUT 30% of the actual electricity generation!
USA uses coal to produce 50% of it's electricity. It's production of steam coal was 1,100 million tonnes or 350 giga. At most, it's only has production of 700 giga!

cheeerios!

The US seems to use a lot of electricity per head of population.

Compared to Europe and Japan,  the average American is using 2 times more electricity than the average European and Japanese.

In China,  patterns of electricity consumption will probably follow Japan and Europe.   In other words,  the average Chinese will end up using only half of the electricity used by the average American.

Therefore,  if China generates the same total amount of electricity as the US,  it probably indicates that the total GDP of China is 2 times bigger than the GDP of the US.

When China will produce 2 times the total amount of electricity produced by the US,  it would probably indicate that the  GDP of China will be  4 times bigger than the  GDP of the US.

I never understood why the US is wasting so much electricity.

The average American is using 2 times more electricity than the average Dutch or German ,  but the average American income is not  2 times bigger,  the American GDP per capita is not 2 times bigger than in Holland or Germany.

China is wasting very little electricity.

Chinese electricity consumption will follow the same path as Japan.

China should produce 2 times more electricity than the US by 2018.

By 2018,  China should have 2 times the electricity consumption of the US and China should have 4 times the real GDP of the US.
