In this medium level rainfall region, we need to be proactive in assuring adequate water resource.

The is a area of 1 million km2 in the Yunnan, Guizhou, Guangxi, Laos region!
Population is around 140 million people.
This gives it a density of 1.4 people/hectare.
For a highland, this is rather dense population while I estimate it to have 1000 billion tonnes of rainfall or water resource! This represents 1/3 of China's water resources!

We have to be careful as to the use of land in this region.
The forest cover do help in the DEW POINT of this mountainous region which gains the Southwest winds during May to October period!

China must ensure TREATED WATER supply to the entire South West region. This includes building of reservoir or protect lakes equivalent of 10 billion tonnes of water to ensure YEAR ROUND water for drinking, cleaning, industrial needs! For farming, we might need to have a lake supply to keep at least 10% of the water resources!

To protect the WATER CATCHMENT area, arable land should be used for INTENSIVE FARMING, such as those for TUBERs, instead of the low yield highland rice. (16 mt vs. 2mt). China's need for fuel for vehicles will increase in the next 20 years, and having a 5% petrol equivalent of crude oil need is vital for national security - and FOOD SECURITY as well.

Serious attention should be undertaken to improve condition in the South West in China. Urbanization should proceed to urbanized 65% of the population in the SouthWest, Laos!

Ever since we talk about the HYDROELECTRIC scheme for the Southwest....

...I thought it would meant HUGE WATER STORAGE in those provinces!

Apparently the TREATED PIPE water network is not implemented yet for the province creating the news we see today! Some CHINA ACADEMY OF SCIENCEs should study ECOLOGY of the Southwest and limit damage to the FOREST as it helps to create a lower DEW POINT, allowing more rains to be created!

Money can be raised, just like what Chongqing Water Co. did in Shanghai last week!

China should INVEST and become the MOST FAVOURED PARTNER...

...in Thailand, Laos, Cambodia and Cholon, Vietnam area, the region most ECONOMICALLY linked to the Southwest Region!

Production of TAPIOCA, or other tubers are more valuable compared to Highland Rice, proper use of water, without damaging the ECO SYSTEM, meaning - please cut down trees sparingly - OTHERWISE SOUTHWEST China will face a real water crisis!....DEW POINT changes means RAINFALL will be affected!!!!

Having the HUGE WATER storage could keep the region more wet.....more rains,
and AFTER this year drought problem, MORE WATER can be released downstream, AND with investments from China's Southwest region - we could produced a lot of CAFFEINE, OPIATES, GLUTAMATES, ANTIBIOTICS, high FRUCTOSE SYRUP, grow FRAGRANT PLANTs for lot of PACKED DRINKs industry in China.....

The packaged, canned, bottled drink business in China could be 100 litres x Rmb 2 x 1.3 billion = Rmb260 billion, making an export of Rmb26 billion raw material to the rest of China very profitable....besideds tobacco, coffee, tea, opium for medical use, fruits trees, fragrant trees, Rubber......

CHINA will be a very popular BENIGN country in IndoChina....

ha ha ha

The main WATER CATCHMENT area is Yunnan, Guizhou, Guangxi, Laos.

Thailand, Cambodia, Myanmar, Cholon-Vietnam has fully used the water, and laid waste to their landscape. Not a single tree during my visit to some of those areas!  It's China's careful, scientific management of the FOREST, agriculture, township, cities that would ensure proper WATER RESOURCE management.

High Intensive PRODUCTION of appropriate crop, without damaging the eco system, and Rain creation! China can invest in PROCESSING of product of agriculture to export, bring prosperity, jobs to the Southwest, Laos region! China is also probably introducing PROCESSED piped water in Southwest, Laos, Cambodia to improve sanitary condition, water quality - increasing the economic capability in the Southwest and IndoChina in general!

The BIG WATER STORAGE system, first allow the FILLING UP of BILLIONs of tonnes of water, and should eventually reproducing the near normal RIVER WATER flow in the Mekong River, Irriwaddy Rivers!

I'm curious about the energy and protein in staple food--
in the difference among potato, wheat and rice per hectare.

It said that potatoes yielded more nutrition for less work per hectare than any grain. For those higher area becoming less humid and colder, won't it be sensible to grow more potatoes ?
