Er, How Were The Brits Better?

Weren't they the ones who started the slave trade in Africa, to supplement the pirating income on the high seas?

Were they not the ones who pushed opium on China?

Didn't they break the fingers of the Indian weavers so that the natives were forced to buy British piece goods?

Were they not the treacherous sods who, even after being forced out of erstwhile colonies, unfailingly sought to plant timebombs of discord to plague the victims for tens of generations more - India/Pakistan/Bangladesh; suddenly flavoring "democracy" in the vaning years of colonial rule in Hong Kong, etc.?

Even today, the Brits are among the most insistent in refusing to return any of the loot collected in their museums, of any of the treasures they robbed during the Empire days - kind  of their way of clinging on to glory.

So GD, tell us why this affinity to a bunch of passe rogues who deserve contempt?

Unfortunately the disgusting trade of slavery was not confined to the British. African slave traders exploited their own people to sell to those who bought slaves.
Other countries in Africa and Asia had forms of slave labour.

Where a market existed and where home grown middlemen were also happy to exploit the addicts.

The rule of law, separation of powers, public service etc, a great legacy to leave the former colonies. Whether those newly independent countries were able to keep up the standards is another thing. Sadly some have failed (the Mugabe dictatorship a perfect example), others have succeeded like India which faces more challenges than less successful democracies.

Yeah, it might have been a bit late, but it certainly would have been better and more popular with HK citizens if it were not for the interference from you know who.
