A COURT IN ZHEJIANG PROVINCE has announced its ruling in the country's first case of native place discrimination in job recruitment. The law is of great significance to the fight against discrimination and safeguard the equal right to employment. China Daily writer Wang Yiqing comments:

Hangzhou Internet Court issued its verdict in China's first case of "native place discrimination" in job recruitment, ruling in favor of the job seeker who brought the lawsuit.

The job seeker, who was rejected by Zhejiang Xilaideng Resort Ltd because she comes from Henan province, will receive compensation of 10,000 yuan ($1,422) and both a verbal and written apology from the resort. The written apology will be published by Legal Daily.

Discrimination against people from certain parts of China is common not only in job recruitment but also throughout society. And it is not only people from Henan province, but also those from many other regions that are the victims of such negative stereotyping.

Native place discrimination persists as it is always invisible and hard for the victims to obtain evidence proving they have been discriminated against because of where they come from.

In this case, the company's human resource staff publicly rejected the job seeker's two applications and listed her place of origin as the main reason for rejecting her application, which not only provoked public anger but also violated the job seeker's legal rights and interests.

It is good to see the victim of the resort's discrimination has turned to the law to safeguard her rights and interests. It is also good to see the court punishing the resort for its discriminatory behavior.

Besides native place discrimination, there are many other discriminations that undermine people's equal employment rights, such as gender discrimination. This case sets a good example of using the law to eliminate discrimination and hopefully it will have excellent demonstration effects in promoting equal employment rights for people no matter which part of China they come from.

It is expected that judicial remedy can be an effective way to curb discrimination and safeguard people's equal rights when applying for a job.

Chinese also look down on women over 25, especially if unmarried.

It is the same anywhere, just the way it is presented will be different!
Majority of job seekers do not know what it really is.
China Central Government may implement guidelines but it will not be practised as the outocme is never in favor of the employer.
This is where the major difference lies!

Of course, discrimination cases are all over the world places for as long as this Earth has existed and work places are the most common areas because enterprises or corporations are thinking and talking about profit makings at their best whilst communications are predominantly important on daily business affairs in whatever types of businesses .

The case mentioned is a good start to sense the light through the tunnels for cases known to be discriminated unfairly. However, this can also set in motion upheavals among potential employers and job applicants because many of these are difficult to debate or arbitrate privately or through legal challenges other than a waste of time, effort and money. Don't make legal officers or lawyers wealthier !

There is an amazing life story to be enlightened. Visited a hospital of Shenzhen People's Hospital recently and discovered that a Jordanian national with "assumed lost passport and expired visa" was hospitalized therein who was fetched from the street with assumed serious illnesses. He has been in the hospital for several weeks and has not paid ( assumed broke as well ) his bills despite being treated very nicely by doctors and nurses. Local policemen had interviewed him but not sure what the outcome was like. I am not writing to disgrace him or any party; except praises for the hospital staffs and hospital. But, Jordanian Consulate should have been there on day one to take care of its citizen, pay for the bills and fly him home to Jordan which is quite an oil rich country. Then publish these good gestures of the hospital and China (CCP) in worldly news channels.

Now, if any local folk without public insurance cover falls into such trauma on the street, will he/she receives this sort of attentions?

Another subject is, " HK Chinese blooded terrorists or radical rioters bullied, threatened and injured ( killed too ) Chinese who spoke Putonghua lingo " ; isn't this the most dreadful discrimination on Earth?
