(CGTN) South Sudan's education minister on Saturday applauded China's support to the country's schooling sector after Beijing facilitated the printing of more than 700,000 textbooks use by students.

The country's minister of general education Deng Deng Hoc Yai said the Chinese support would help expedite the process of rolling out a new education curriculum early next year.

Hoc said that China had helped the East African country print at least 750,000 textbooks and built the capacity of dozens of South Sudanese education experts.

“The support given to us by China is printing of almost 3 million text books, training of curriculum experts, education managers and our ICT staff. It is a big investment from their side and we are getting it free,” the minister said.

Hoc added that South Sudan had signed cooperation agreements with China, Egypt and Turkey in a bid to improve its education sector.

“We are grateful to the government and people of the People's Republic of China for that enormous support,” he added.

South Sudan's education sector has been affected by the five-year war that has torn the country apart.

It is however hoped that a peace deal signed in August will ensure lasting peace, thereby enabling education and other sectors to run smoothly.

Unesco should be happy China has taken this initiative. Other developed countries? One doesn't know why they have not helped similarly. Perhaps for them it's more ideology before lifeline support in things like education which really matter.

I believe the important reason is that fighting has not stopped despite the peace deal signed in September.

China boasts about not interfering in other countries internal affairs, but in cases like this when China provides assistance to regions that are in continued conflicts, that assistance will always support one side or another - normally the most powerful.

And that is interfering already.

In this case for example, who decides what the textbooks will tell of the ongoing civil war, or the history leading to it. One can only hope that these are textbooks to teach simple reading and writing or math, without propagandizing to any direction even through playful riddles.

As it is said, pen is often mightier than a sword.
