CCTV News just reported that police in Shangdong Province busted a case of gaokao cheating using electronic devices and arrested the mastermind and his accomplices!  Cheating in gaokao is not new, has been around for as long as gaokao has been around;  problem is, with advance in internet and electronics technology, cheating has become more sophisticated, testing the ability of the law enforcers to counter it.  But the fact that there is a market for these cheating devices tells us that cheating is well and truly embedded in the mind of many a student, and that does not bode well for the future!   Students are the future leaders in businesess and in politics.  What is there to prevent the cheating culture from migrating from schools to offices and businesses in future?   In fact there is evidence that this is already happening;  witness the numerous cases of fraud and of pyramid selling busted by the police,  in which college graduates were arrested!

And recently Premier Li announced, "The priority now is to improve our business environment with stronger measures against cheating in the marketplace, such as counterfeiting and infringements on intellectual property rights," !

Yes Mr Li,  the measures should start with the schools and the education system.  Early education on good social credit behavior would breed a future generation of honest business leaders that will take China forward!

Cheating is prevalent in many countries and China is no exception. Even in some prestigous schools in the US, there has been no shortage of examples of academic cheating. Only when the teachers utilize other types of assessments instead of make or break tests, then cheating is less likely to happen.

Yes, cheating happens all over the world; Indian students are good at that too; there was a recent report which said Indian students going for exams must have their long sleeves cut away to make sure there are  no hidden devices.  But that said, there is no excuse for cheating in gaokao just because students in other countries also cheat; two wrongs do not make a right!! China must not follow the bad examples!

Why do you say "cheating is PREVALENT in many countries..." as if it was the most normal, most regular feature of life? This opening statement makes cheating a harmless thing that only needs to be curbed for window-dressing purposes.

You should never say "cheating is prevalent in many countries". It should be fought everywhere with the means the local have at their disposal. Unfortunately, in China you have almost nothing at your disposal with which to stop it. It is deeply ingrained in the national psyche. Some parents even criticise teachers for marking the mistakes their children make.

If passing the Gaokao were not universally seen as the No. One ambition for every school child in China, cheating might actually decrease.
