(Xinhua) Starbucks' chief executive apologized in a press release Sunday for a recent racist arrest in one of the coffee stores, which triggered demonstration on the street and condemnation on social media.

Protesters gather outside a Starbucks in Philadelphia, Sunday, April 15, 2018, where two black men were arrested Thursday after Starbucks employees called police to say the men were trespassing. The arrest prompted accusations of racism on social media. Two black men Thursday went to a business meeting in a Starbuck store in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, but were arrested because they did not order a drink.

Philadelphia's Police Commissioner Richard Ross confirmed Starbucks employees called 911 and said two black men were trespassing; as they refused to leave, they were arrested and eventually released eight hours later.

A social media user Melissa Depino tweeted "the police were called because these men hadn't ordered anything. They were waiting for a friend to show up ... All the other white ppl (people) are wondering why it's never happened to up when we do the same thing."

The user also posted a video of part of the incident, which sparked outrage at the controversial and racist arrest.

Starbucks Chief Executive Official Kevin Johnson on Sunday expressed his "apologies to the two men who were arrested" and said "Starbucks stands firmly against discrimination or racial profiling," describing the incident as "a disheartening situation" and the arrest as "a reprehensible outcome."

Johnson also said the company "has immediately begun a thorough investigation of our (employees') practices," adding Starbuck will work with outside experts and community leaders to understand and improve their practices.

More than three-dozen protestors rallied on Sunday afternoon outside the concerned store, demanding firing of the store manager.

Philadelphia Mayor Jim Kenney said Saturday "I'm heartbroken to see Philadelphia in the headlines for an incident that ... appears to exemplify what racial discrimination look like in 2018," local media reported.

re:   racial discrimination look like in 2018

In my opinion; nothing to do with racial discrimination...
A uneducated Starbucks employe called police and said the men were trespassing by not ordering anything..
The police I consider even less educated for arresting the 'trespassers'.

Sack the store manager for not training the employs,
same with the police brass; and let the arresting 'OFFICERS' clean the Starbucks store for a fortnight.

The arrested men should get 12 cups of their cheap brew for free

Starbucks to Shut US Stores One Day for 'Racial-bias Education'

Starbucks will close stores and corporate offices across the United States on May 29 to conduct "racial-bias education," the company announced Tuesday, under the pressure of widespread outrage over the arrest of two black men in one of its cafes.
Starbucks said more than 8,000 stores would be closed on the afternoon of May 29 and training provided to nearly 175,000 employees...
The woman who posted the video, Melissa DePino, said a Starbucks employee called police because the men had not ordered anything, while they waited for a friend. "All the other white (people) are wondering why it's never happened to us when we do the same thing," she tweeted. "The men were sitting there peacefully quietly and they were put in handcuffs and they were walked out of the store, humiliated, embarrassed and put in a patrol car," DePino subsequently told MSNBC television.

How much is Starbucks going to financially compensate for the racial humiliation the two black, and all other black suffered from?

They should demand Starbucks for a formal written apology in black and white for record.

What makes you so damn sure these two men were "victims of racism"?

Yes, they were Blacks and they were taken out of a STARBUCKS in handcuffs. The incident happened in the USA. Enough for you to jump on the bandwagon and to proclaim that the USA is a racist society in which Blacks get shafted all the time...

I have no opinion thus far on what the real problem is.

If the two men had been Whites, would it have made it into the media?

Let's see what preceded the ignominious exit of the men:

The two men entered a STARBUCKS to meet a third men who was not there yet. they lingered somewhere in the café, taking up space but not consuming anything. Eventually they caught the attention of the staff. They were asked what they wanted to drink and they declined the request to order.

The next development was pretty much over the top but not entirely irrational: Someone called in the police.

The rationale of the staff is this: STARUCKS is no waiting room. It is a café. It makes its bucks through selling drinks. Here were two men who refused to buy drinks inside the premises run by STARUCKS. They were challenging the raison d'etre of the premises.

Maybe the skin colour did add to the drama. The staff may have concluded the men were there to seek a confrontation. They acted like loiterers. A busy café that sees first two loiterers, then maybe five, will soon turn into an asyum for the homeless. Once the homeless take over a McDonald's or a STARBUCKS its normal vocation is practically ruined.

That is the other side of the coin. We wont hear it, I guess. STARGUCKS has responded by closing down all its US branches for a day to train their employees on how to deal with potential customers who cannot immediately make up their minds as to what they want...

Could people outside of the USA perhaps learn something from this experience? Would they treat customers who procrastinate with placing their orders  differently? .
