A two-and-a-half-year-old boy in Wuhan was diagnosed with alopecia areata, or spot baldness, caused by too much stress. His mother sent him to five training classes-English, mathematics, fine arts, piano and public speaking-over the past two months in a bid to get him into a prestigious kindergarten next year.

Why are they putting pressure on their children to excel academically?  What is the deep reason behind such a prevalent of concern of parents? Is academic achievement is the only route to success?

At 2 1/2 years old, his language skills are only beginning to develop. The cognitive skills area of his brain has not begun to develop at all. It sounds like these parents have, collectively, only two brain cells. One is lost, and the other one is out looking for it.

In a recently published 19 year study in the American Journal of Public Health, it was determined that kindergarten children who have developed social and emotional competency skills fare much better in school overall than those who bombarded and overloaded with academics. It's the kids who shared, listened to others, resolved problems with their peers, and were helpful who excel in school and are successful in life.  It's the social and emotional skills that parent SHOULD be instilling in their young children and foster to adulthood. These skills and values are not taught in school.  The kids who had trouble cooperating, listening, and resolving conflict were less likely to finish high school—let alone college. They were more likely to have legal problems and substance abuse issues.  A 2 and a 1/2 year old DOES NOT need to be learning academics beyond discovering the world around him in a natural way... that's ludicrous.
