The problem is that Chinese have spent too time and energy on unnecessary reciting! We should pay much attention to internal links within the book and try to grasp the author‘s real spirit and re-tell the story in your own words!

Different ways would lead you to different place where the fruits may be sweet or bitter!  ------------We must do reforms on education!’

Bribery of teachers

Your saying is meaningful. At the same time,I think it is more accurate if we say that it is teachers' corruption if they always force students to the low-level job ‘reciting’--------------since that is poison in the education field!  On one hand, children are keeping busy on unnecessary things those are not helpful to their ability-improvement; On the other hand, teachers may use students‘ abstract scores to fool the public as well as themselves on how well they have done on teaching job!’

About “recite them almost at an instance."-------------
I think you have been fooled by the film-director who could use one bowl of water to show flood on the screen! ----------It makes no sense if Tom is taught to always repeat others' words! ------------The problem with the poem conference is  that it has emphasized too much on reciting with little runners' real poem-talent, (such as could they produce a wonderful poem of ancient style by themselves just as chairman Mao did.)???

If you think that memory is not important, I have to disagree with that. Without retention of knowledge, how can one ponder, criticise? One cannot think and ponder over nothing. Critical thinking is important (which is your point and I agree) but so is memory.

Know-ledge is what you or others have known;  Thinking ability is the power for you to know the unknown!
The first (knowledge) looks like the fruits growing on the tree; while the later (thinking )acts as the tool with which you could reach the sweet the fruits and get them down for food!
So in ancient China there was such a famous saying:”授之以鱼,不如授之以渔”--------------Presenting fish to you is no better than to teach you how to do fishing for living!

All thinking-process goes from knowledge to knowledge, so a good student  must learn the original text  whole heartly in advance and then make some valuble remarks that is a good way for schooling. Unfortunately the China-style exams have mislead the education into wrong way which waste too much energy on unnecessary reciting!

Sad!
