According to a report by the McKinsey Global Institute, China spends more on economic infrastructure annually than North America and Western Europe combined. Is that China's secret to economic power? Has China invested much more than needed? Should the country give its priority to its social security?

Again such comparison by absolute numbers is meaningles. I would like to see how this compares per capita and size of territory.

One of China's challenges in future will be, how it can afford to maintain the already existing and aging infrastructure. Many of China's roads and railways are relatively new now, but they will need to be fixed and rebuilt eventually. Are there too many to maintain them when the economic going gets tougher?

There are powerful non-economic factors that should come into play in the decision-making process.

European and North American infrastructures have been in place for a long time. China's infrastructures were non-existent. Thus it's easier to start from scratch; especially now with existing new technologies.

Hmmm, I think it is way TOO early for China to brag about its infrastructure construction and compare itself to Western countries.

China is only now catching up with developed nations in terms of building roads, railway lines, urban centres and so on. For example China has 124'000 kms of railway lines. Well, that is far behind what the U.S.A. has.

And the quality of life in Chinese urban centres is nobody's dream of life. It will take China at least one more generation before its cities compare with those of Europe (though none will have as many historic buildings as Paris, Rome, Athens, Vienna).

The current trend is for China to lay the foundations for a modern industrialised nation. The West has done that a century and a half before.
