He has accurately described a diffrerence between Western medicine's approach to treating patients and the T.C.M.s' - but he has failed to explain which one saves more lives. It isn't T.C.M.... It isn't any of the uncounted T.C.M. quacks practising in China as we speak.

About ten years ago, certain low-quality colleges in China enrolled Indian students in medicine study. I saw Indians studying medicine in Dali, Yunnan - might be an extra reason to pay a visit there and check things out. I don't know if that college still attracts Indian students.

There also were some threads in our FOrum run by Indian students complaining about conditions at their university. I definitely formed the impression these courses were offered mainly because Indians did not have enough alternatives back home or elsewhere. The courses in some of these institutions were held in English, and a recurrent complaint was that the lecturers' English was incomprehensible to the students.

You don't know what's going on in the West: T.C.M. struggled until recently to be accepted by the medical establishment as a viable alternative because it has no scientific basis.

Thanks to Western doctors, though, and because of popular demand, T.C.M. is now accepted as one of several alternative therapies in some cases.

Thgis means that certain conditions can be treated with traditional Western medicine or with other forms of medical treatments, such as ayuverdic treatment, T.C.M. etc. In fact, patients are not given a binary choice - there are DOZENS of alternative medicines to choose from in some cases.

But T.C.M. practitioners in the West must have a relevant background. A Chinese T.C.M. degree alone is not enough; they must have a regular medical doctor's degree and practise T.C.M. as an alternative.

The medical insurance comnpanies also have their word to say: some do not pay for treatments by T.C.M. practitioners, some do. The patient can make his or her own decision but in either case he foots the bill first before the insurer refunds him or not.

Chinese folk medicine also produces undesirable and sometimes dangerous side effects. Shall we start listing them???

Wisdom is when people use medical advice only when needed. Too many people trust the efficacity of drugs rather than their own self-healing power. Just look at Chinese parents in winter: as soon as their child coughs or sneezes they rush himn to a hospital. A cold does not need drugs to heal.

Indeed, the financial side is quite important.

In Finland, with quite heavy tax-funded public healthcare, the government jointly with medical professionals maintains a detailed list of different medical conditions and their preferable treatments, considering what is cost-efficient for the population as whole.

To get on that list, the treatments must give some proven and measurable results - this is generally known as evidence based medicine.

This allows government to estimate the costs of running the system, streamlines treatments between different public hospitals and doctors, and gives general public opportunity to confirm that the treatments they get are acceptable in quality and safety.

When it comes to TCM, which is not evidence based medicine, obviously it is difficult to go mainstream in this way.

Private hospitals are then option to seek either more expensive western treatments or treatments from alternatives such as TCM.

What I usually hear, is that some people who suffer from chronic illnesses or pains that are not curable with western medicine, sometime seek help from TCM - importantly not to cure anything, but to make their conditions more tolerable somehow.
